E-mail Hosting One Day, Card-Dealing the Next

Gambling is a popular form of entertainment. It appeals to several desires, including the desire for risk, the desire to "defeat" a system, and the desire for a quick payout.
Gambling is based on chance but allows for some skill. Just as chess is a psychological game in which it's important to read the other player's mental state and imagine what the player's plan is, so are games of chance. The players who play them lend themselves to analysis.
Poker is a good example. The act of "bluffing," lying about the value of the cards one holds, is crucial to success. By the same token, guessing when other players are bluffing is just as important. Many have "tells,"or telltale signs, such as a nervous tic, that skilled players notice. This sign reveals when an opponent is bluffing…unless the other player knows about the tell and uses it to confuse his own opponents. A good poker player then must be a scholar of people as well as the cards.
Success in other games, such as slot machines, is almost entirely based on luck. The only outside factor is when the player decides to pull the lever or push a button to stop the spinning wheels. Some people believe certain slot machines are "better" for winning and will seek them out in hopes of hitting a big jackpot.
People congregate in casinos to gamble, but in the digital age, it's easy to play on a computer over the Internet against other players. Online gambling is illegal in many places, so sometimes it's still necessary to go to a casino. Still, laws change with the times, and as technology and people's attitudes change, maybe someday even e-mail hosting services will provide gaming opportunities, and one can play slots while checking email.
